About the project
Home Away From Home transformed a private apartment into a collective exploration of migration, belonging, memory, and home.
Bringing together immigrat artists from twelve different nationalities, the exhibition invited visitors to encounter not one definition of home, but many.
WHAT DOES HOME MEAN WHEN YOU NO LONGER LIVE WHERE YOU BEGAN?
Home can be a country. A language. A smell. A family. A ritual. A memory.
For migrants, it often becomes something continually reconstructed rather than permanently inherited.
Rather than answering this question, Home Away From Home invited visitors to experience how different people from different parts of the world understand it.
THE APARTMENT ITSELF BECAME PART OF THE EXHIBITION, CREATING AN INTIMACY IMPOSSIBLE TO REPRODUCE IN A CONVENTIONAL GALLERY.
Home Away From Home was conceived as a Multi-Lens Exhibition™, bringing together artists from across Europe, Latin America, North America, the Middle East, and Africa to explore one shared human question: What does home mean?
Hosted inside a private apartment awaiting renovation, each room became an intimate artistic intervention responding to migration, memory, identity, belonging, displacement, family, language, and care. Although every artist approached the question differently, their works formed a collective conversation about what it means to build a life between places.
Rather than presenting one curatorial narrative, the exhibition invited visitors to move between many perspectives, discovering that home is never experienced in quite the same way twice.
A SPACE FOR DIALOGUE AS MUCH AS OBSERVATION.
Unlike some of my other exhibitions, participation in Home Away From Home emerged primarily through conversation, mediation, and shared interpretation.
Visitors were encouraged to move through the apartment collectively, discuss the artworks, meet the artists, and exchange their own stories of migration and belonging.
Experience Program
Guided Exhibition Tours
Mediated walkthroughs connecting the artworks, the architecture of the apartment, and the broader themes explored throughout the exhibition.
Rather than explaining the artworks, these tours invited discussion and multiple interpretations.
Sound Installation
Om, Sweet Home
Upon entering the apartment, visitors were welcomed by Pagoo's continuous vocal chant—a poetic meditation on home that resonated throughout the exhibition.
The piece created an atmosphere of calm and belonging, gently preparing visitors before they encountered the artworks.
Participatory Installation
Sar7ain
Mexican-Lebanese artist Sasha Azar invited visitors to eat an edible installation inspired by the Lebanese flag.
The work questioned the ways cultures are often consumed superficially while the people, histories, and identities behind them remain unseen.
Publication
Home Away From Home Exhibition Guide
A publication introducing the artists, exhibition concept, apartment map, and curatorial narrative, supporting visitors before, during, and after their visit.
BEHIND THE EXPERIENCE
Rather than investigating migration through academic disciplines, Home Away From Home explored the question of home through a plurality of lived experiences, artistic mediums, and cultural perspectives.
Each artist became one voice within a larger collective conversation, allowing visitors to encounter many understandings of home rather than a single curatorial definition.
