MAPPING MIGRATION JOURNEYS THROUGH COLLECTIVE STORYTELLING
About the Interface
Our Map was created as part of Expedition In Situ?, an immersive art experience developed with mixed-media artist Michelle Andrea around migration, cultural heritage, identity, and displacement.
Envisioned by XAV and produced in collaboration with Michelle Andrea, the installation invited visitors to trace their own migration journeys across a painted world map using pins, strings, and handwritten notes.
Along each route, participants added an object they had metaphorically “looted” from their place of origin: something they carried with them that represented their culture, memories, or identity.
As individual journeys accumulated, the map became a collective portrait of displacement and belonging—revealing the different routes, objects, and histories carried by the people sharing the room.
The interface translated the themes of Michelle Andrea’s In Situ? series into a personal act of mapping, allowing visitors to locate themselves within the exhibition rather than simply observe it.
